Commercial advertising work often calls on the photographer and his team to come up with the concept and how to execute the shot for the campaign…. So there is a general description from the agency then we pitch concepts… Sometimes this means actually shooting the concept so the client can visualize better where we are heading.
And this was the case with this year’s State of Origin shoot for QRL.
So here is what we pitched… loved the idea but the end product was a more static shot for the players.
These were some images taken in the studio on Medium format and 5×4 film of a performer from Circus OZ.
The challenge of any portrait is to try and capture the real person behind the one they present to you when you first meet.
The photographers job is to breach the gap between the person facade and the person behind within the 5-10 minutes that we have to gain their attention. Some are easier than others.
My last trip to Melbourne I photographed a cross section of people from the Architectural firm Graypuksand….
These are my versions of the images .
A recent trip to Melbourne I had the chance, thanks to my partner Michelle from Bespoke Packaging, to photograph Kym Munro an Artist based at Somers on the south-eastern corner of the Mornington Peninsula on Western Port. She a has business called Succulence. Her home/art space was a great location for the portraits of her and her work. www.succulence.com.au

The brief was Hair Extensions….. Make them sexy….. 4 hairdressers from Bossy Hair… 2 make up artists…. and 3 models…
Love working with hairdressers…… the brief is broad an up to my interpretation….. They watch the big screen in the lounge and and forget to say when is enough… so we just keep shooting… the model keeps changing the pose…. lots of choice..
Models , hairdressers, great clothes … great afternoon in the studio..
Here was a photography job that pulls together the talents of 3 photographers ( Nadine Shaw, Mark Duffus< Leon O’neil) , 5 assistants , 2 makeup artists and a Rugby league team along with the management that comes with a modern football team/club….. 5 hours of photography that goes from straight forward shots to more complex lighting and then the addition of a car on the set.
One of the creative shots required on the day was for NIKE…. where we were able to change to a black background from the standard white…
